No prices are quoted here. What is described is the ladder: what each rung of noise measurement actually gives you, and the point at which paying for the next rung starts to make sense.

What paid accuracy actually adds

Apps differ, and the differences have been measured rather than guessed. A study evaluating sound level meter apps for occupational use assessed three iOS applications, including the one NIOSH publishes, and set out to tell health and safety professionals whether such apps are suitable for assessing occupational noise exposure rather than treating them as toys. That framing is the useful one for a household budget too: the question is not whether an app is as good as a meter, it is whether it is good enough for the decision in front of you.

Continuous measurement, and what it costs in practice

The next step up from a spot reading is measuring all day, and the research on doing that cheaply is instructive. A design study built a wearable, smartphone-based noise monitoring system for agricultural workers that measures exposure through the day to within about plus or minus 2 A-weighted decibels of a Class 2 sound level meter, collects the data to a server and presents it back to the worker. The reason to mention it in a costs article is the trade it makes: modest accuracy, continuous coverage, low cost. For a desk, continuous coverage is usually the thing worth having, because the complaint is about a pattern rather than a peak.

When a shared building changes the arithmetic

In a shared building the measurement is no longer for you. It is for a landlord, a manager or a neighbor, and its value is in whether they accept it. That pushes you up the ladder for reasons that have nothing to do with physics. Before paying, ask who has to be convinced and what they would accept, because the answer is sometimes a written log rather than an instrument.

Costs people forget

  • Time. Each proper measurement round is an hour once you include setup and notes.
  • Repetition. One reading is not a result, so budget for at least two.
  • Calibration, if you buy a meter. It is a recurring cost, not a one-off.
  • The second test after the change, which is the only reason the first one had value.

Common questions

Is a cheap handheld meter better than a phone app? Not automatically. An uncalibrated cheap meter can be worse than a well-reviewed app on a phone whose hardware has been characterized.

Should I hire someone for a home office? Rarely. Hire when a formal decision depends on the result, not to satisfy your own curiosity.

Do landlords accept phone readings? Sometimes, alongside a dated log. Ask before spending on anything more.

What is the cheapest way to make a measurement credible? Repeat it. Three consistent readings taken on different days from a marked position persuade most people.
